Course Description: 

Join us to learn about the lessons learned from the successful Maine HPV Vaccination Project, which taught dental professionals how to talk with patients and parents about HPV vaccinations. We will also provide overall training on HPV and HPV vaccination to build your knowledge on these topics. Your patient's HPV can cause up to 70% of oropharyngeal cancers. Your conversations with your patients and families can help prevent HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer and other HPV-associated cancers in the future.

Educational Objectives:

  • Learn how to develop a workflow to initiate HPV vaccination education conversations with patients and parents.

  • Understand the burden of HPV and current HPV vaccination recommendations.

  • Build confidence in the public health role of dental professionals to use HPV vaccination education as an oral cancer prevention strategy.

  • Review HPV vaccination educational resources for patients, families, and dental professionals.

  • Skills:

    • The skills to develop a workflow to initiate and track educational HPV vaccination conversations with patients and parents.​​

  • Course materials and handouts:

    • Participants will be given an HPV Conversation flowchart/process map that can be used chairside and an HPV vaccination. conversation tracking sheet template with example codes to use.

    • A resource sheet with HPV vaccination educational resources will also be shared with the participants.

Jessica Reed, MSN, GNP-BC

Jessica Reed, MSN, GNP-BC is the Clinical Quality Manager for the Maine Medical Association Center of Quality Improvement (MMA-CQI). She is also the Network Director for the Maine Primary Care Association’s Patient Safety Organization. She has developed and implemented multiple quality improvement projects to help increase HPV vaccination rates across the state of Maine.

Debi Chalmers, RDH, IPDH, MSDH

Debi Chalmers, RDH, IPDH, MSDH has been a practicing dental hygienist for 14 years. She currently practices clinical hygiene for a Federally Qualified Health Center and as an adjunct clinical professor for the Dental Hygiene Program at the University of New England. She has also published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene.
