Course Description:
DANB® Radiation Health and Safety Examination Preparatory Course (6 CEs) Dawn Bearor, RDH, MEd, EdD This course is intended for dental assistants preparing to take the DANB® Radiation Health and Safety Exam®. Please see information below regarding purchasing the required textbook in advance of the course. The course will focus on the four content areas of the exam, including: patient assessment and preparation for radiographs; safety management of radiography equipment; regulations, policies, practice and procedures to ensure patient and operator safety; and radiographic infection control procedures related to patient care. Additionally, participants will be provided with study resources, and with guidance on both applying to take the exam and the process for applying to the state of Maine to obtain radiography licensure. Learning Outcomes: - Demonstrate an understanding of basic equipment and supplies utilized in dental radiography. - Understand the principles of x-ray generation: radiation physics, properties of x-rays, and x-ray technical factors (mA, kVp time, distance) influencing the quality of radiographic images. - Be familiarized with procedures, techniques (bisection and paralleling); and imaging best practices. - Identify appropriate location of receptor placement to capture expected anatomy. - Understand radiation biology, hazards, and protection measures. - Learn radiographic equipment modifications that maximize patient and operator safety. - Learn proper infection control measures as they relate to patient care in dental radiography. - Distinguish between types of Images (extraoral and intraoral), their purpose and use. - Recognize common imaging errors and learn corrective measures. - Be familiarized with ADA guidelines for recommending patient radiographs. - Distinguish between common oral pathologies (dental caries, periodontal disease and periapical lesions) and normal radiographic anatomic landmarks and restorative materials. - Gain familiarity with Federal and State radiography rules and regulations. *Textbook requirement - see Terms & Conditions Conflict of Interest / Financial Disclosure: Pending review. This edition of the textbook serves as one of several recommended study resources published in the Exam Outline by the Dental Assisting National Board® and can be purchased online via numerous vendors, including Amazon. Participants may choose to purchase the textbook new, used, or in digital format. Renting is also acceptable. Please allow sufficient time ahead of the course to acquire in order that it can be referenced during the day of the course and immediately following for additional study. Photos: A photographer will be present at the event, taking photos for the Maine Dental Association to use in future flyers, brochures, social media posts, and on our website.
