Course Description:
The Cavity-Free Menu: A Minimally Invasive Guide to Managing a High Caries Risk Patient (6 CEs) Nathaniel Lawson, DMD, PhD The Cavity-Free Menu is a practical, evidence-based guide for dental professionals who manage and restore patients at high risk for caries. This course presents a step-by-step framework for diagnosing and treatment planning using modern detection tools, including transillumination and AI-based caries detection. Participants will learn how to create personalized “prevention menus” that patients can choose from—turning preventive care into an engaging, collaborative process. The menu covers dietary modifications, oral hygiene enhancements, fluoride and fluoride alternatives, microbial load reduction, pH optimization, and salivary function support. Minimally invasive treatment options such as silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for caries arrest and ICON resin infiltration or remineralization for incipient lesions will also be reviewed. By the end, attendees will have a clear, patient-centered strategy for preventing and managing caries while preserving natural tooth structure. Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Diagnose and assess caries using advanced detection methods, including transillumination and AI-based caries detection tools. 2. Design individualized prevention plans by selecting from a comprehensive menu of dietary, hygiene, fluoride, antimicrobial, pH, and salivary interventions tailored to each patient’s needs and preferences. 3. Apply minimally invasive treatments such as silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for active lesions and ICON or remineralization strategies for incipient lesions to arrest or reverse caries progression.
